UNWTO Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Tourism Development in Pangandaran.

This program is the initiative of UNWTO Biodiversity Unit – supported by Federal Ministry of Environment and Nuclear Safety of Germany under the International Climate Initiative program – as its concern for sustainable tourism development in Indonesia, particularly in Pangandaran. This program aims to create various options which can be done by tourism stakeholders to anticipate climate change, both in mitigation and adaptation aspects. Mitigation measure to be made is developing green energy concept and implement it together with tourism industry, especially hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and travel agents. While adaptation measure to be developed is continuing coral reef transplantation which has been initiated during UNWTO Tourism Development Supporting Biodiversity Conservation project in Pangandaran 2008-2010; as well as planting mangroove in Pangandaran coastal areas. This adaptation measure is to be linked with tourism program to allow direct contribution from tourism for natural conservation.

Indecon works together with Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia, UNWTO (www.unwto.de), Pelangi Indonesia (www.pelangi.or.id), and Adelphi Research. At the local level, Local Working Group Pangandaran (www.ngarumatpangandaran.org) is our main partners, as well as other prospective partners such as Hotel and Restaurant Association, Guide Association, and tour operators.

This program is expected to become a model for destination development which clearly implement environmentally friendly principles up to technical level; to be adopted at other tourism destinations in Indonesia. This program is also expected to increase competitive advantage of Indonesia tourism destination in order to answer the global challenge of tourism market, which has increased awareness on the importance of environmentally friendly tourism.
