“Communities in International Tourism Business”

CandirejoECEAT – European Centre for Ecological and Agricultural Tourism is the leading European organization in small-scale sustainable tourism field with special attention to rural areas and organic farming. ECEAT is also a network of over 1300 small-scale accommodations and tourists services all over Europe, offering sustainable quality of tourist services and approves their contribution to local communities and protection of the environment that promotes responsible travel which brings almost 500.000 overnights every year in rural areas for benefit of local economies in 20 European countries and satisfies responsible travelers. It is also provides the best professional expertise in sustainable tourism field through projects all over the world, including in Indonesia.

Started in February 2008, INDECON works with ECEAT to accelerate and increase the economic growth of the local community in selected CBT sites in Indonesia with the Europe market in CBT that will be one of the target groups.

In policy, Community Based Tourism concept has just been adopted by the government of Indonesia in the year of 2003. The development of general standard for community based has been made, but not yet finished and no implementation has been made.

Regional Meeting - Bali 008The project aims to grab the market and develop link between the regions. The project will improve the quality of products that meet with Europe market; and implemented Marketing strategies. The increasing number of visitation will achieve the economic growth at local level and prevent the loss of natural resources degradation. The target groups are the stakeholders (community, local and national governments, civil society, small and medium community based enterprises, and local tour operator) in four community based tourism sites in Indonesia (West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and West Java), which attract visitors from Europe.

Some activities has been done for the projects. Those are CBT baseline study and its marketing overview in four area in Indonesia; one national and regional (Southeast Asia) workshop to define CBT criteria;  and national network consolidation training session on CBT Marketing.  Other activities, such as National Supply Chain stakeholder workshop, second training session and  develop jointly marketing tools between the regional countries and the Europe hub will be conducted in the following years.

Location selection and the target groups for the project activities are based on some consideration such as:

    • already have community based tourism product or potential to be improved as a community based tourism
    • Involving local community in the planning process;
    • Some of the sites already have been visiting by foreign visitors, especially Europe based;
    • Encompass uniqueness and specific biodiversity value;
    • Easy access and strategic location in order to encourage regional tourism development;
    • Represent different ecosystem, in order to generate different approach according to the local characteristic
