Ecotourism Development in Gunung Leuser National Park, Aceh Province
This program was designed in order to follow up the assessment which requires alternative livelihood to be developed
in the region to complement the on-going conservation program. The general objectives are (i) involving local communities in Leuser Landscape in developing ecotourism tour products and improving their services; and (ii) introducing the newly developed tour products to national and regional tourism markets specializing in responsible ecotourism and educational adventure tourism.
Activities in this program included identifying tourism potential together with community, which was followed by focus group discussion to create new tourism products based on the potentials. The project also conducted guide training, tourism services and promotion in social media. Primary outputs of the action include (i) recommendation for local government on tourism product development; (ii) report on tourism potential in Keudah, Gayo Lues District; (iii) Six (6) new ecotourism products in Keudah and surrounding; (iv) more than 25 local guides in Keudah and 20 guides in Ketambe were trained on guiding services and tour product development; (v) new tour products were offered and tested by Medan and Jakarta city based tour operators; (vi) new tour products were covered up in National Geographic Traveller Indonesia and promoted in electronic media and social media; (vii) 25 stakeholders (tour operators, park managements, community groups) were trained on online media. Project result had also been reported and disseminated to the provincial government.
