Ecotourism in Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra
- Posted by
In 2004, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP), along with Kerinci Seblat National Park (KSNP) and Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP), was established as Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatera (TRHS) and inscribed by the UNESCO into World Heritage List as one of Natural World Heritage. However, in 2011 TRHS fell into the category of World Heritage Site in danger due to illegal logging, encroachment, and road construction across its parks area. In respond to this, UNESCO through Indecon and PP2Par ITB facilitated 3 national parks to develop master plan for ecotourism development in TRHS. Field surveys, discussion with stakeholders, and stakeholder meetings were conducted from February to June 2014 in Jakarta, Medan, and 3 national parks. Final reports are currently on finalization and will be available soon.
