KUTAI National Park

Size: 198.629 hectares. Kutai is in East Kalimantan, one of the fastest developing regions of Indonesia, and is of high conservation priority because it includes extensive lowland forest, one of the most threatened habitat types of Borneo.

Biological Richness :

  • The park’s contains a substantial proportion of dipterocarp species altogether, more than 500 tree species are found within the park.
  • Around half of Borneo’s mammals are found in the park, including 11 of the country’s 13 primates.
  • Nearly 80 per cent of bird species found on Borneo are present.

  1. Teluk Kaba and Muara Sangkimah
  2. Teluk Lombok and Muara Sungai Sangatta
  3. Prevab Mentoko
  4. Goa Lobang Angin

Recommendation:

  • A visit to Kutai could be combined with an introduction to some of Kalimantan’s many tribal groups, known collectively as Dayaks.
  • Longhouse and other aspects of their colorful culture can be seen most easily along the Mahakam River.
  • The park is 80 km North of Samarinda, the provincial capital, and is accessible by road, and by sea.
