Generously gifted with high biodiversity and cultural diversity, Indonesia is a heaven for tourism. Nevertheless, Indonesia also faces considerable threats on biodiversity conservation. Many environmentally destructives activities are still taking place. The activities are both the ones creating direct and large environmental impact such as illegal logging and fish bombing; yet also the ones creating less direct impact – but not always less destructive; including tourism. Indonesia also faces threats on cultural preservation; as many Indonesians know very little of the local culture, often comparing to foreign culture. Many Indonesians already recognize the biodiversity and cultural diversity as assets, but are still looking for ways not to destruct the environment; yet develop them as tourism assest while also securing their family livelihood. Ecotourism, as a concept of sustainable tourism which adopts the principles of ecology, is one of the alternatives for sustainable natural conservation and cultural preservation. With its pro-community and environmentally-friendly principles, ecotourism can become the engine for local economic development, job creation, and supports local cultural preservation. Many stakeholders in Indonesia have been starting to join sustainable tourism development. Many areas have started since 90-ies and have successfully developed destination collaborative management. Many have developed exquisite environmentally friendly-pro community-tourists friendly tour products both at terrestrial and marine conservation areas; or have developed heart-winning community based village (eco)tourism at fascinating villages and tribes. Yet, many have just only started yesterday by identifying their potentials. However, we believe that these stakeholders are moving on track. These stakeholders are compiling their efforts as ecotourism network to support sustainable tourism development in their areas. Their experiences and lesson learnt are briefly describe here to inspire others to do similarly. |
